Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Wear It Pink Campaign

According to the latest World Health Rankings data published in April 2011 Breast Cancer is ranked ninth in the top twenty causes of death in Saint Lucia. Breast Cancer Deaths in Saint Lucia reached 11 or 1.34% of total deaths. The age adjusted Death Rate is 14.59 per 100,000 of population ranks Saint Lucia #117 in the world.

The good news is that many women and men can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

The Micoud – Ti- Rocher- Dennery library in collaboration with the Micoud Health Centre, Ti – Rocher Health Centre, Bureau of Health Promotions and St.Lucia Cancer Society will be launching their first annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month-Wear it Pink Campaign on October 3rd 2014 with a Heath Fair from 9:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m which will continue every Friday until the end of October at The Micoud Community Centre.

This event is design to promote awareness of breast cancer in women and men in our communities, schools and local businesses. The activities on the day include exhibitions, vital checks – (pressure, glucose, waist circumference, BMI, PAP smears) breast examinations by nurses, PowerPoint presentations and information sessions on self examinations and early detection.

This activity is free and open to public. They encourage persons to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to be informed, educated and inspired as they raise awareness about this dredged disease. For more information contact The Micoud Library at 454-4059.
