The Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary School took another step towards capturing another secondary school sports title, when they clinically defeated the Vide Bouteille Secondary School 55–11 Thursday afternoon in the Under-19 division quarter-finals of the 2009 Saint Lucia Inter-Secondary School Basketball Tournament.
Played at the Vieux-Fort Multi-purpose Courts, the Vieux-Fort Comprehensive lads stormed to a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and from then on, took the game by the scruff of the neck shaking off any challenges from the opposite end of the court.
Vide Bouteille Secondary did not score a point in the second and third quarters. Kevin Mathurin led Vieux Fort Comprehensive with 18 points, three rebounds and three steals. Vieux Fort led 23–4 at the end of the second quarter and after the third 38–4.
Vide Bouteille finally broke the drought in the final quarter with seven points. It was far too little, too late, as Vieux Fort won rather convincingly.
Also leading the Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary charge was Desmond Charles with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight steals. Philbert Williams and Olvin Prescott also chipped in with six points each.
For Vide Bouteille Secondary, Joel Polius and Denver Hyacinth scored five points apiece in this lopsided affair.
In another Under-19 quarter-final on Friday, it was upset time as heavily favoured Castries Comprehensive Secondary School (CCSS) lost 73-61 to a high spirited and determined St Mary’s College (SMC) team.
The turning point in this exciting encounter came when one of the top players for CCSS Zevi Clarke, got into foul trouble midway through the second quarter. As a result much of his time was spent on the beach. In his absence, teammates failed to take up the slack. SMC capitalized and at one point led by 22 points.

Lance Louis led the way for SMC with a game high 27 points and 12 rebounds. Ornodelle Phillip with 13 points and Herbert Regis had eight.
