Cycling and Moto X fans were treated to exciting breathtaking action over the weekend, as the St Lucia Moto X Club and St Lucia Cycling Association staged two competitions here.

The first was on Sunday at the race track at Cul de Sac, where a massive crowd turned out for the launch of the Monster Energy Drink National Super-cross Championship and Monster Energy Independence Race. They came to see their home town boys battle the Martinique group, in what has become a friendly but sometimes heated rivalry between the neighbouring countries.

As a result of the dry weather, the track became an oval dust bowl as riders manoeuvred their way through hairpin turns and soared to dizzying heights over monster jumps.

Young Shaquille Jn Marie placed first in the C P-wee Class with 25 points. Norris St Edward finished second (23 points) with Antonio Maynard third (21).

Dexter Felix won the Class B Intermediate (22.33), followed by Randy Rosemond (21.67) and Olson Francois (20).

The lads from Martinique ruled the Expert A Class. Alex Marie St Luce placed first (25) followed by Kevin Elcock from St Lucia (23) and Julien Cherubin from Martinique (20.33).

Shifting gears to another two wheeler sport, cycling returned to the Castries City Circuit in a big way on Monday, with the staging of the JQ Charles Group Independence Cycling Classic.

Cyclist of the Year Kurt Maraj proved why he deserved the title, winning three of the four major races. Maraj won the Open Race for Seniors with his twin brother Kirk second and Winston Williams third.

In Devil Elimination race, Kurt out duelled his brother Kirk finishing first with 44 points. Eustace Dookie placed third.

Kurt’s third victory came in the Points Race where again he edged out his twin brother. Winston Williams was third.

The battle of the siblings finally went in Kirk’s favour when he won the grand finale—the Match Sprint Race. He finished ahead of Kurt who was second and Dookie who placed third.

The competition was also keen among junior riders. Jordan Richard won the Open Race for Juniors, with Russell Ferdinand second and Damian Mathurin third.

In the Cadet Race for riders Under-13, Sebastien Ribot captured first place. Olivia Descartes placed second followed by Manasseh Wilson.

No doubt about it, pedal pushers and Moto X riders put on a highly entertaining competition with plenty of thrills during the holiday weekend.
