UNITED STATES PEACE CORPS TO HOLD EXPO

Since 1961, Peace Corps Volunteers from the United States have lived and worked in St. Lucia, playing an active role in supporting community development, as well as engaging in the rich culture the island has to offer. In recognition of “Peace Corps Day” the organization will host a Peace Corps Exposition in St Lucia, on Saturday March 6, at the Town Hall in Castries from 10am-4pm. The purpose of the exposition is to share aspects of American culture as well as to share the work of Peace Corps Volunteers past and present in St. Lucia. This interactive, drop-in event will offer activities for adults and children and will highlight a few of the Volunteer projects that have been carried out in collaboration with government ministries, non-governmental organizations, and community groups with which the Volunteers work.

As one of the very first Peace Corps programmes in the world, St Lucia has hosted over 600 American volunteers in communities from Vieux Fort to Gros Islet, Dennery to Soufriere. Currently, there are 27 volunteers serving in St Lucia, primarily in the areas of youth development and community development. The Peace Corps’ mission is to promote world peace and friendship. The three goals of the program are 1) Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women, 2) Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served, and 3) Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

The Saint Lucia Peace Corps office is the headquarters for Peace Corps throughout the Eastern Caribbean. There are 17 staff members who work to train and support the volunteers in Saint Lucia and those in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Carriacou, Dominica, St Kitts & Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda. Please join us for the opportunity to celebrate the 49-year partnership between the people of Saint Lucia and the United States Peace Corps.
