La Cou Dou Strikers win Knockout Cup

Written By: Star Reporter on Dec 29th, 2008

Victory was sweet for La Cou Dou Strikers after winning Sunday’s Home and Away Knockout Cup against Trou Rouge at the Marchand Grounds. They came away with a hard fought 1-0 win. It was a lackluster affair with very few scoring opportunities in the game. It was scoreless after the first half of play. The way this match was going, extra time seemed inevitable. However, with the Trou Rouge goalkeeper out of position after making a save, Max Nicholas scored the game winner from close in.

Having beaten Trou Rouge in an earlier final, Coach of La Cou Dou Strikers, Barry Demille said during an interview “we had to prove to them again that we are the champions.” He pointed out that his team played a defensive game and did not employ the same offensive tactics against Trou Rouge when they met previously. With the score tied 0-0 at the half, Demille felt in order to win the team had to strengthen the midfield. The move paid off.

Commenting on the overall tournament, Demille said: “It was okay but the standard was a little but low compared to other years but we still hard to work hard to win.” Sixteen teams competed in the tournament which was a home and away affair. Public Relations Officer for the Marchand Football League, Tennyson Glasgow said:  “The tournament was organized to give the players in Marchand and the environs a feel of some football since they did not have much in the way of tournaments in 2008.”For winning, La Cou Dou pocketed $2,000 while runners up Trou Rouge received $1,000.
