18-year-old St. Lucian gunned down in Canada

Written By: Alisha Ally on May 8th, 2009

A St Lucian youth was made the sixteenth homicide victim in Canada on Friday May 1.

According to Canadian officials, 18-year-old Jarvis
St Remy was shot and killed while waiting for a bus in Toronto. Police reports indicate that St Remy was standing at a bus stop around 10:45pm when two men approached him on foot and began firing shots. Residents in the housing complex close to the bus stand called the police but when they arrived, they found the lifeless body of the young man on the sidewalk with the perpetrators nowhere in sight.

Family members remembered him as a family boy who adored basketball, aspired to be an engineer and “didn’t leave home enough to have enemies.” St Remy was set to graduate the Western Technical-Commercial School next month.

Julietta Rosemond, a close friend of Jarvis’ mother Clemee Joseph, spoke to the STAR saying it is devastating for friends and family of Jarvis. She described him as an obedient, respectful and reserved person who excelled in his studies. Clemee left for Canada in hopes of paving a better life for her sons. The Rockhall resident endured the bitter cold in Canada and was finally able to send for her boys in 2003. Clemee is not taking her son’s death lightly as friends describe Jarvis as “her world.” Jarvis is survived by his younger brother. According to friends, Jarvis’ father left the island on Wednesday May 6 to head for Canada.

A distraught Clemee spoke to Newsspin host Timothy Poleon about the tragic passing of her firstborn. “I raised a good boy and he has never been in trouble, no gangs, nothing. He’s 18. When they’re that age the law in Canada says they’re adults so you don’t have control over them. I still had control over him. He went to school and back and he had a few friends he hung out with. He never back-talked me. The best boy; I’m a lucky mother to have had a son like him.”

Recollecting the sequence of the events on the night that Jarvis was ripped from this life. “He left to go to his friend’s to watch a basketball game on TV and usually his curfew is at midnight and his friend’s place is not too far from where we live, about 10 minutes of driving. I thought by midnight he would be home. The phone rang just a little after 11. I thought he was calling me because he usually does that. He would call to tell me he was on the bus coming home. But when I answered the phone it was his friend calling to tell me he got shot and I didn’t know what to do and what to say. I thought it was a minor thing.

“The friend said Jarvis had just left the apartment and he was standing by the bus stop, he was standing there alone and the friend closed the door and went inside and he said he heard one gunshot then two more. The police are still investigating and are treating it as a case of mistaken identity. They recovered a bullet during Jarvis’ autopsy and hope that will give them a lead. His body will be out for viewing this Friday and he will be buried on Saturday at 10am.”

According to Clemee violence seems to be the norm in Toronto lately—perpetrators request cellphones, money and even shoes and should you refuse, guns and knives seem to be the weapons of choice to force conformity.

Just a correction to this article, it should be the 16th homocide victim in Toronto not Canada, cause the number is way higher than that in the entire country.

My sympathy to Ms. Joseph, it is a cruel world we live in where some people play God in deciding who should go, when and how.

Leon I guess you will not be doing much travelling anywhere. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. May you all find peace.

I will not say canada is not a safe place. Canada is a nice place to live and have kids. The problem is the young kids just want nice shoes and material things and will do any and everything for it. The next thing is the system canada law is different if a 16years old kill someone they will not say his name because he is a minor thats wrong i belive you did an adult crime you should get adult punishment. most times if convicted because of their age they only get 2yrs for taking somebody’s life, that sucks. Anyway i hope they find my son’s killer because i will not be at peace until i get that call saying Jarvis’s killers have been found. The police said it might be a case of mistaken identity i don’t give a dam mistaken identity will not give me my son back i just want justice for my son. I want the chance to face the killers in court to asked them why, why, why did you take my son from me why did you take Kasim’s best friend away from him? One day i will get my wish.
