Five boxers and two officials left St Lucia Wednesday afternoon
for Martinique to participate in a boxing card there over the weekend.
The Boxers are Yanic Leon, Miguel Auguste, Adolph Augustin, Josiah
Augustin  and  Lyndell Marcellin. Accompanying the boxers to Martinique are Second Vice President of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association (SLABA) and Team Manager, George Alfred; and Coach Renaldo Toledo. The boxers are expected to return here next week Monday.
The team is made up of junior boxers with the exception being senior Miguel Auguste.
St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association President David “Shakes” expects big things from the boxers.
“Some of the boxers who went there before have medalled already so again we are expecting them to really hold their own,” said Christopher.
Christopher says he expects the boxers to do well in Martinique.
With the cancellation of the OECS Boxing championships and the
postponement of the October return card, the local association is using this Martinique trip to expose a number of young boxers who have been training hard for a number of months now for the OECS Championships and other regional engagements.
Christopher is extremely disappointed the OECS Boxing Champions which was slated for St Lucia got cancelled and feels the date should be brought forward instead of leaving for later on in the year.
“This tournament normally starts way down the calendar like late October, November and sometimes even early in December, said Christopher. “I feel the OECS Sports Desk should bring it up to August.”
He also pointed out that with the cancellation of a number of regional boxing events, the SLABA may have to stage another local event before the year ends. One possibility is boxers coming together in the upcoming festivities in this year’s
Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC).
Meantime in more boxing news, one of St Lucia’s best amateur boxing  Referees, Julie Bonnett, has been invited to officiate at a boxing card in
Barbados this weekend. Bonnett is expected to leave here Friday for the  card takes place Saturday night. She is expected to return home on Sunday.
