A retired teacher and mother of four is the newest member of St Lucia’s legal fraternity. Sylma Finisterre, who taught at Methodist Primary, Entrepot Junior Secondary School, Castries Comprehensive and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College before taking up studies in Law, was called to the bar on Thursday by Justice Ephraim Georges and presented by attorney at law Petra Nelson.
Sylma worked as an educator for three decades in St Lucia and the United States. She possesses a first degree in Accounting from UWI Cave Hill, and has co-authored the definitive text for CXC Office Administration, a tome she is currently engaged in revising and updating in keeping with modern technologies and management techniques.
In 2005, Sylma returned to UWI to embark on her current path, completing her first degree in two years, doing six and seven courses per semester instead of the normal five.
She graduated from Hugh Wooding Law School earlier this year, having done internships at the Registry of the High Court and at the Court Reporting Unit during the course of her studies.
The wife of former Deputy Director of Tourism and Member of Parliament for Babonneau, Felix Finisterre, Sylma is mother to Terry, Ian, Faye and Yuri. Faye actually preceded her mother as an attorney at law—she currently practices in Barbados. Sylma, presently attached to Chancery Chambers, has one grandchild, Akili.
