The St Lucia National Senior Men’s Table Tennis Team and the 17 and Under Boys Team returned from the French Antilles Championships held in Guadeloupe from October 29 to November 1, with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The St Lucia Men’s Team, led by reigning OECS champion and St Lucia’s number one player Adrian Albert, reached the final of the championships by beating French Guiana 3-0, Guadeloupe “A” 3-1, and Guadeloupe “B” 3-0. The final against Martinique was a grueling encounter lasting three hours with Martinique scraping home 3-2. Albert was the only player to have played unbeaten in the Team event.
St Lucia’s 17 and Under team did not fair as well as the senior team, losing to Guadeloupe “A” 3-2, and Martinique 3-1. The boys however beat French Guiana 3-1 and Guadeloupe “B” 3-0. Omarie Ferdinand was the pick of the players in the team event recording just one loss.In the men’s singles, Albert after playing unbeaten for 15 matches succumbed to Ritchie Palton of French Guiana in the Semi-finals in a highly contested match that ended at the wire 2-3. In the play-off for the Bronze medal, Adrian Albert made short work of Alexandre Brigault of Martinique 3-1. Alex Tertulien of French Guiana beat his teammate Ritchie Palton in the final 3-0.
In the Men’s Doubles Final, Albert and Chris Wells beat the Martinique team of Brigault and Nicholas Poiret 3-0. It was sweet revenge since the Martinique pair had beaten them in the Team event.
In the Boys 17 and Under Singles competition, Ferdinand was too much for his French counterparts winning all six of his matches. In the final he beat a Guadeloupean 3-1. Jedaiah Pierre lost in the semi-final but in the play-off for the Bronze medal he beat his French counterpart from Guadeloupe 3-0.
