SLNT gathering signatures to Save the Pitons!

Written By: Star Reporter on Nov 16th, 2009

The St Lucia National Trust can’t take it anymore. The usually mild mannered organization is asking St Lucians and other supporters to sign on to a petition that is demanding that government should stop all development in the Pitons Management Area, which was designated a World Heritage Site.

Earlier this year, the St Lucia government was warned that if it did not place a moratorium on all development within the World Heritage Site, St Lucia was in danger of becoming only the second site in the world to suffer the disgrace of losing World Heritage status.

“We are deeply concerned and ashamed about the possibility that the Pitons Management Area may lose World Heritage Site status through the failure of the government of St Lucia to comply with its part of the the agreement with UNESCO,” the petition to the prime minister reads.

“We call on the government of St Lucia, acting on our behalf to comply with the requests of the World Heritage Committee . . . with the greatest possible urgency and certainly before 1st February 2010.”

St Lucia’s agreement with the WHC requires that St Lucia “urgently re-establish and maintain a moratorium on development decisions within or affecting the property.”
St Lucia is required to submit a report on the state of conservation of the PMA to the WHC by the beginning of February this year. After that the WHC will examine St Lucia as a World Heritage Site at its 34th session later that year.

At press time more than 300 signatures have been gathered urging the prime minister to stop the indiscriminate and often illegal real estate development taking place in the PMA. As an online petition begins to circulate, the Trust expects that hundreds more signatures will be gathered.

For a country that depends so heavily on tourism, it is utterly beyond comprehension that the govern is placing our renowned World Heritage Site (The world famous Pitons) in jeopardy of having its status rescinded.

Well done National Trust for taking a stance to protect our much admired twin peaks and its micro ecosystem. Where to I sign the petition? Can someone please provide a link?

    Cheers

We are about to find ourselves going the way of Jamaica rather than our more progress bajan freinds. Its all about standards my people!!! This is yet another shit storm which was formed and perpetuated by both of our so called choices for government. They both are guilty of selling the country away…..peice by peice! How much land did the former administration sell away to the uber rich and how much is now being parcelled away at the present moment. I feel ashamed to call myself St. Lucian! The present administration if it is truly a united workers party should immediately seek to reclaim this land under emminent domain and the opposition should do nothing but support this action!!! This is what Flavia should really be matching for!!!!….an issue which both political parties are guilty in! St. Lucians should take note! This the kind of thing where government prove whether they are for LOCALS or for…….l

if slnt serious they would mobilize to clean up choc river….marchand river….soufriere river….can we really afford world heritage status at this time?its all in the timeing ……like indepedance ,is this the time to put status against jobs ?after we destroy all almost all the marine liffe from cap to marigot……or independance when the masses are ignorant and they run the infrastructure……if SLNT really love stlucia at least start with soufriere river……SO LET US GATHER SIGNATURES TO SAVE STLUCIA AND STOP THE POLITICS………TOOF

What an absolute disgrace!!! Every St.Lucian with a hint of national pride should hide their faces in shame that it should be allowed to get to this point. A partition is the least that should be done now!!! Someone give me a sledge hammer!!!

Rising from the depths of the royal blue Caribbean Sea
Her mounds have mothered us from birth
Currency fuels a rape of the land
Suddenly the end of nature is upon
Raised hearts now race to her salvation
Her scarred wounds hidden by cement
Man is still the savage beast

Greed is our fear of poverty. The pitons represent a rare land mass formation which give St. Lucia a unique identity. Allowing housing in such a beautiful part of paradise is like craping on your own foot.

  18. Jean-Baptiste says:

When everything in St. Lucia is available for purchase, what do you expect from any Government? When money is the only truth, what do you expect? When power is worshipped by the masses, what do you expect? When corruption is a normal everyday thing, what do you expect? I think your expectations are all hypocrisy.
