Under-20 side capture Women’s Football title

The Women’s Under-20 National Team did not succeed in their quest to qualify for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup being staged in 2010 but all was not lost. Playing as unit in a domestic tournament organized by the St Lucia Football Association (SLFA), the ladies proved once and for all they are far and away the best team in St Lucia.
On Sunday at the Gros Islet Playing Field, the Under-20 side won the SLFA National Championship with a hard earned 4-3 victory on penalty kicks against VSADC.

Penalty kicks were used to settle the issue after the score was deadlocked 1-1 after regulation time. Lisa Evelyn put VSADC on top 1-0 in the 55th minute. It was a brilliant solo effort by Evelyn. She neatly side stepped the goalkeeper who came out to challenge her, but in the end a nifty move by the VSADC player led to an open net goal.
The score ignited the VSADC side and they did take control of the game—if only for a minute! The Under-20 side fought back and evened the score with a goal by Captain Ellaisa Marquis in the 67th minute of play.
The victory on penalty kicks earned the much maligned and often criticised Under-20 National Team the title. They should be congratulated for having played the entire tournament without losing a game.
Prior to the final was the third place playoff between Sting Rays of Anse La Raye and Amazons. Sting Rays won that encounter 3-1 with Shewis Wilson scoring two goals in the 47th and 85th minute while Mellisa Gabriel got the other marker in the 53rd minute.
The lone goal for Amazons came from Mellisa Joseph in the 65th minute of play.
