This season’s Bachelor series premiered on ABC Monday January 4 and the viewer-ship and ratings for the first show were staggering. Winning its two hour time slot in Adults 18-49 for the first time this season, ABC’s “The Bachelor” registered season highs in both viewers (12.5 million) and young adults (4.4/10), building on the prior week’s telecast for the 6th consecutive week. In addition, “The Bachelor” attracted its largest non-finale audience in over five years and strongest adults 18-49 rating in nearly five years. In addition, at the end of the show on Monday a preview of upcoming shows with scenes shot in Saint Lucia were aired and a voiceover stating “there is no better place to fall in love than Saint Lucia.” The finale of the reality TV show was filmed here on the island.

“This is obviously a huge opportunity for the island and the timing is quite perfect coming in January and February when the show ends,” tourism minister Allen Chastanet told the Star. “It is coming at a time where there has been increase in airlift and I am quite happy as well that the shows which will be aired on Saint Lucia will include two hours filmed in the north of the island and two hours in Soufriere, exposing Saint Lucia to a potential viewership of more than twenty five million people,” the minister added. The series is also being aired in high definition (HD) and this is also a first for the Caribbean and indeed Saint Lucia.

While on island the production crew and cast for the Bachelor were supported by the Saint Lucia tourist board with accommodation, ground transport and technical assistance. Saint Lucia has been guaranteed maximum exposure not just during the airing of the finale, but through various promotions and previews.

Since ABC released the first Bachelor preview video in mid-October, fans have wondered where the newest installment of the reality dating show would take Texas pilot Jake Pavelka. The network later revealed new details about The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love, including the location for this season’s overnight dates, St Lucia. At the end of Monday’s episode fans were treated to a preview of future shows which included scenes shot in Saint Lucia with the Pitons and Pigeon Island as backdrops as well as scenes on a local boat cruise.

On Monday’s season premiere, Jake started entertaining his 25 female candidates at a Malibu mansion with the help of couple Jillian Harris and Ed Swiderski.

ABC’s press release also stated that Ed and Jillian will “share a special announcement with [Jake].’ (Who thinks it’s a wedding date?) During the night’s rose ceremony, Jake will have to cut 10 women, leaving only 15 with the chance to win his heart.

Throughout the rest of the season, Jake will take the ladies on several dates, including: a glamorous photo shoot for InStyle Magazine’s February issue (with six bachelorettes), a plane ride to Palm Springs culminating in a private concert with the band Chicago (one bachelorette), a romantic dinner for Jake and two ladies in Napa Valley, and a dinner at the top of San Francisco’s Coit Tower with one bachelorette).

The ladies receiving the three final roses will take a trip to St Lucia for “sexy overnight dates, as well as the thrilling finale,” on the island which has constantly been voted the Caribbean’s most romantic honeymoon and wedding destination.

According to the Minister of National Security, the clueless Guy Mayers, who said in a speech when the Royal St. Lucia Police Force met to dish out awards and compliments to an inept force, said “I want to see a 50% reduction in crime rate in 2010..” If the minister was sharper he would call for “zero-tollerance.”
But still, he never gave any insight as to how this herculean task could be achieved. Saying on thing with nothing to back it up is a typical UWP government strategy. They have no forseen plan of action to irridicate the problem. Let’s face it, in St. Lucia we have a wild bunch of ill-trained police recruits whose sense of police work is to shoot first and ask questions later. In the past year they have succeeded in shooting only innocent civilians. Ask yourself this question, “how many of the bad boyd did the police kill last year.”to several innocent. Mr Minister by making these bold statement you are putting impossible expectation on an ill-trained police force.
My recommendations to you Mr Minister is to visit all the crime ridden areas, especially the George Charles Boulevard, which is part of you constituencey, and have town meeting with the people, instead of hiding in your safe coocoon at Rodney Bay, far away from the maddening crowd.

This international exposure for St. Lucia as a tourist destination is priceless. I was fortunate to see the Pitons backdrop in a preview of subsequent episodes and it was sublime. My heart swelled with pride.

In addition to police visiting these depressed communities, other social services should be making their visits: family services, social workers, drug rehab officers- become the field and community care officers that you ought to be.

This show proves something I have always said, that is, one can be in love with more than one person at the same time. St. Lucia is ahead of the the world in presenting this concept., Bravo!!!
