In sports there is always a winner and loser. That’s rather unfortunate, taking into account what transpired Friday evening at the Heineken Tennis Open Men’s Championship at the St Lucia Racquet Club, Cap Estate. That evening tennis fans witnesses a classic display of tennis by Alberton Richelieu Jr and Kevin Deligny, who battled for the Men’s Singles title. In the end it was Richelieu coming out on top 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was the master (Richelieu) vs the pupil (Deligny) in this highly charged contest at centre court, where it was standing room only. In the early going it was Deligny who schooled his teacher, by winning the first set in impressive fashion 6-4. Richelieu came back and won the second set 6-3, extending play to a third and deciding set. Throughout the match both players were aggressive rushing the next when the opportunity presented itself. Deligny who in the past had problems with his level of fitness, showed no signs of tiring. In the third set with the score tied 2-2 it was still anybody’s game. However in the fifth game, Richelieu produced a service break to go ahead 3-2. He then won his service game taking a 4-2 lead. At that time many thought it was game over for young Deligny. He rallied back and won the next two games to even things at 4-4. Richelieu though broke his opponent in the next game going ahead 5-4. He then served out the set 6-4 to win the match 2-1. Too bad someone had to lose, but on this night the big winner was the game of tennis and Marcelle’s Tennis Academy who staged a highly successful tournament. There’s more tennis with the JQ Charles Group of Companies Tennis Open on the way. Read more about it in Saturday’s STAR.
