Goals galore in Veterans Football action

It was goals galore Sunday at the Gros Islet Playing Field as four more matches in the 2013 Veterans Football tournament took place.

In the opening encounter of the day VSADC shutout Soufriere 4-0. Scoring for VSADC were Sean Kirton in the sixth minute, Nicholas “Blou” Lawrence in the 41st minute, Soufriere’s Claude St Romain scored an own goal in the 63rd minute while Donston “Vincie” Nicholas converted with a finely struck effort from just at the top of the area in the 75th minute.

In the second match of the day, Gros Islet confirmed their place in the quarter finals of the competition after a 5-2 win over last year’s losing finalist Micoud.

Keith “Allain” St Clair and Kevin Mortley led Gros Islet to victory with two goals each. Gros Islet’s other goal was scored by Francis “Baba” Lastic in the 10th minute.

Prolific striker Simon Evans scored both of Micoud’s goals in the 60th and 80th minutes. He now has five goals and so far is the tournament’s leading goal scorer.

In the most exciting match of the day, Behind the College All Stars had a 4-3 win over Nyah. Goals for the Behind the College came from Hilary Lewis in the 19th minute, Marcus George in the 32nd minute, Marlon Desir in the 36th minute and Kerwin Peter in the 56th minute.

Nyah’s goals came from Hubert George in the eighth minute, Angus “Ridney” Sexius in the 68th minute and Trevor John in the 82nd minute. Dave Frederick missed from the penalty spot for Nyah.

In the final match of the day, Anse La Raye and Caricom Masters played to a 2-2 draw.  Former national player Benjamin “Satan”Gabriel scored both of Anse La Raye while Zeprin Federick and Leonard Scott Evans found the back of the net for Caricom Masters.

After weekend matches, four teams are sure qualifiers for the quarter finals of the competition. Defending Champions Vieux Fort South, Congorians, Gros Islet and Behind the College All Stars.

The final set of preliminary matches will be played this coming weekend.
