History was created on Sunday when three women were elected to serve on the five member executive of the St Lucia Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) at the organisation’s AGM held at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School. This is indicative of the strides the women have made over the years both on and off the field and it is hoped that their motivation and desire to succeed will help to develop the sport on the island.

The new executive is comprised of president, Colvis Samuels; vice president, Wedrel ‘Tommy’St Clair; secretary, Sherry Khodra-Samuels; treasurer, Renetta Fredericks; public relations officer, Valerie Farrell.

Khodra-Samuels and Farrell are serving on the executive for the first time while this is Fredericks’ second term. She served as secretary on the previous executive.

The Union has started 2011 at a blistering pace having hosted the Skippy Lizard Rugby Football Club of the United States of America from January 14 to 18, 2011; facilitated a Coach’s Level One Course and a Referees Level One Course and its AGM in the first two months of the year.

St Lucia played host to 19 Skippy Lizard RFC players for their four day stay on the island. One match was played at the Gros Islet Playing Field where the visitors used their superior fitness and sustained pressure to beat St Lucia 37 points to 26.

The SLRFU trained seven coaches and eleven 11 referees, through a collaborative venture
with the North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) and the International Rugby Board (IRB.) The course facilitator was Scott Harland who is the Rugby Development Officer for the region. He was hosted by the local Union from January 28 to February 1, 2010. Coaches were trained on January 29 and referees on January 30, 2011.

The new level one coachers are Arthur Joseph, Wedrel ‘Tommy’ St Clair, Electra Marcelle, Colvis Samuels, Paulyn Eugene, Bertrand Jean and Edlon Charlery. Individuals
trained as level one referees are Garner Felician, Vonette Victor, Cyril Marius, Renetta Fredericks, Valerie Farrel, Chantel John, Shaun Alcindor, Edlon Charlery, Lenford Eugene, Crescentia Innocent and Colvis Samuels.

St Lucia’s rugby personalities of the year 2010 were acknowledged at the meeting. They are Renetta Fredericks, senior female; Lenford Eugene, senior male and Paulyn Eugene, junior female. Congratulations to these outstanding athletes. More special performances are expected of them in the New Year.
