Player-Coach Vibert Sonson sounded an early warning to affiliates of the Castries Football Council (CFC) when he led Lancers FC to their first title in recent years.

On a day when six affiliates of the CFC gathered at the Sab Sporting Facility on Sunday to usher in the second edition of the Castries Super League, the SLFA Premier League teams through VSADC, Lancers and FC Pioneers displayed their pedigree to join Valley Soccer in the semifinal round, after an extremely competitive first round of games in the 2013 Soccerama.

In the first semifinal Lancers FC and FC Pioneers were locked at 1 goal each after regulation time, but on the ensuing penalty kicks Lancers prevailed 6-5 to earn a spot in the finals.

VSADC then locked horns with Valley Soccer in an exciting and nail biting second semifinal that ended goal-less after regulation. In the penalty shootout the Orange men edged out the 2012 Premier League Champions 4-3 to earn a place in the finals.

When Lancers FC squared up against Valley Soccer in the finals it looked like a completely different proposition to their first round encounter. That’s because the more experienced ‘men in baby blue’ sat back and soaked up the pressure from the tournament favorites, before launching counter attacks through their back line anchored by Cassius Springer and Trevor Daniel. The tactic paid off thanks to a lapse in concentration by the Orangemen to allow Player/Coach Vibert Sonson to latch onto a loose ball and rifle it past Valley Soccer’s custodian Janaii Clifford.

The lone goal made the difference and handed Lancers FC a well deserved victory and the title of 2013 CSL Soccerama Champions.

The Castries Super League officially got underway on Tuesday with Agard Sports Club defeating FC Pioneers 2-1.
