Quadruple Beaubrun gold in FGCU triple win

The Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) swimming and diving team swept four events, en route to three wins at its quad meet against conference foes Georgia Southern, Liberty and Radford on a sunny afternoon at the FGCU Aquatics Center on Saturday.

FGCU defeated the Eagles of Georgia Southern 236-46; picked up a win against Liberty, 235-57 and downed Radford, 250-50. With the wins, FGCU has extended its conference-winning streak to 12 meets dating back to January 2008.

Opening up the meet with a sweep, junior Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) took first in the 1650-yard free with a time of 17:34.41. Freshman Lindsey Meeder (Boynton Beach, Fla/Park Vista Community) and senior captain Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla/Lecanto) took second and third, respectively.

Daniel and Cooke took first in second in the 500 free as well with freshman Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic) taking the third spot. Daniel finished at 5:06.52, while Cooke (5:09.84) and Porter (5:15.16) to take the first through third spots.

Only falling to the top swimmer from Liberty, Porter and McKenzie Cassidy (Lehigh Acres, Fla/Bishop Verot) finished in second and third, respectively in the 200 free. Porter clocked in at 1:56.31 and Cassidy finished with a season-best time of 1:57.92.

FGCU also won the 200 back as senior Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden/Polhemskolah) and freshmen Nicolette Hansen (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Cheryl Corvo (Shalimar, Fla./Choctawhatchee) swept the event.

Corvo (1:01.13) also took third in the 100 butterfly behind juniors Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, NY/St Bonaventure). Cianci finished first with a time of 58.37 followed quickly by Butler, who touched in at 58.88.

Junior Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, UK/Kelly College) took first in the 100 free with a time of 52.56, finishing just ahead of Porter (54.93). Cadge (58.83) also finished first in the 100 back, while Corvo (1:00.87) took third. Cadge and classmate Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec/Université Laval) finished one-two in the 400 IM. Cadge clocked in with a season-best time of 4:26.66 while Plante touched in at 4:36.39.

The Eagles also had sophomores Danielle Beaubrun (Vieux Fort, St Lucia/The Bolles School) and Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School) take the first and third spots in the 100 breaststroke. Beaubrun touched in at 1:06:56 with Rodriguez shortly behind at 1:08.58. Beaubrun also took first in the 200-yard version of the event with a time of 2:25.42, while Rodriguez took second, touching in at 2:27.02.

In the 50 free, freshman Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) finished in second place behind Liberty’s Brye Ravettine, who posted a season-best time of 24.13. Tanninen touched in shortly behind at 25.22.

The Eagles finished first and third in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. The team of Cadge, Beaubrun, Butler and Tanninen posted a time of 1:49.68 to take first. Hyddmark, Plante, Cianci and senior Isabela Mills (Petropolis, Brazil/Universidade Amembi Morumbi) took third with a time of 1:52.23.

In the 200 free relay, Beaubrun, Tanninen, Daniel and freshman Brittney Evans (Hollywood, Fla/Cardinal Gibbons) took first for FGCU with at time of 1:39.08.

FGCU is back in action on Friday at 6pm against conference rival UNF. The meet is at the FGCU Aquatics Center and is the final conference meet before the conference championship.
