Sympathy pours in for displaced family

St Lucians were horrified this week after a television news report aired featuring distraught Cas-en-Bas resident, Eliue Mathurin, who was unceremoniously evicted from family land he had occupied for more than twenty years. In the piece, the single father of three youngsters aged two, four, and eight recounted his ordeal after returning home from a court hearing to find police waiting with a court order to demolish his home.

Mathurin claims he was never served or given appropriate time to remove his now scattered belongings from the property. He also expressed that he had been rendered penniless by the legal tussle.

The story is gaining traction and building momentum. Video has been circulating on social media sites with persons decrying the injustice and questioning the humanity of the judicial system.

One furious reader commented: “This is a total example of demoralization. The Judge who made such a shameful decision should be aware of the magnitude of this decision. How can one make such a decision without taking the proper notification that all parties involved in the case are notified and are represented in a court. What is the
best interest of the children? Now this man is homeless and so are the children. Is the system so flawed that a ridiculous decision is causing so much harm? Where is the justification in this case? Clearly neither the lawyer nor the judge should be employed by the citizens of St Lucia. This is a shameful act.”

Another offered: “We need to as a nation show more love and compassion. Let’s reach out and save a family. My heart goes out for these children. This is a chance for our politicians and community leaders to speak, intervene and help those in distress.

As the comments pour in from all over the world, many are clamoring to assist the displaced family. An account has been set up at First National Bank Account Number: 504200004. Mathurin can also be reached at 758-518-6482.
