It will be a West Coast Derby in the finals of the 2011 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament after West Coast teams Anse La Raye and Canaries, registered contrasting victories in semi- final action of the tournament Saturday evening at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
In the first semi- final Anse La Raye dominated Mon Repos defeating them four goals to one.
Dane St Croix with two goals in the sixth and 63rd minute, Chad St Croix in the eighth minute and Nicholas Gabriel in the 90th minute, sealed the convincing win for Anse La Raye.
Joel Charles in the 59th minute scored Mon Repos’ lone goal.
In the second semi-final, Canaries triumphed over former champions Dennery 4-1 on penalties, after their encounter ended 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time.
Dennery opened the scoring in the sixth minute when their captain Angus William converted. Canaries equalized in the 18th minute through Cantius James, but Andrew Charles sent Dennery 2-1 up in the 34th minute.
That’s how the score line stayed until just seconds before the final whistle of regulation time when Canaries got the equalizer from Bradley Tisson.
Dennery was shown three red cards in the encounter. Their Coach Benson Emile was ejected from the bench and midfielders Timothy Emmanuel and Victory Leon were shown red cards after receiving two yellow cards for two bookable offences.
Canaries coach Dominic Leonty says his team’s discipline on the night was the key to winning the encounter after going behind twice.
The third place playoff and finals of the 2011 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament take place on Sunday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground. The third place play off is set to start at 5pm between Mon Repos and Dennery, while the finals between Anse La Raye and Canaries kicks off at 7pm.
On that day there will be two other matches. From 1pm Caricom Masters play The Dennery All Blacks Veterans in a friendly veteran’s encounter, while football teams from sponsors Windward and Leeward Brewery (WLBL) and LIME take on each other after.
