It was all excitement this weekend at the Sab Sporting Facility, as 10 clubs affiliated to the Castries Football Council (CFC) competed in the soccerama to usher in the start of the 2011 football season in the city.
The day’s activities started with a brief opening ceremony where the Chairman of the Castries Football Council, Francis Daniel, Tournament Director, Andy George and SLFA President, Patrick Mathurin, addressed the 10 teams ahead of what is expected to be a very busy season for football players and enthusiasts.
Placed in three groups the 10 clubs battled it out the entire Sunday. At the end it was VSADC and Bisee
Lions qualifying for the third place playoff and Lancers FC and Nyah qualifying for the finals.
The tournament continued the following day (Monday) because of bad light on the previous day (Sunday). Veteran Club VSADC got the better of Bisee Lions in a long drawn out penalty shootout, after a very keenly contested game that saw both teams finding the back of the net once in regulation time.
In the eagerly anticipated finals the youthful exuberance of Nyah was too much for tournament favourites and defending champions Lancers FC. Nyah edged out Lancers FC 1-0.
The MVP of the soccerama went to goalkeeper Arthur Langelier of Nyah for his sterling performance between the pipes on both days.
Tuesday marked the start of the Castries Super League as defending champions Lancers FC went up against new kids on the block Agard Sports Club at the Sab Sporting Facility.
