This weekend Coconutz Restaurant and Bar, located in Rodney Bay along the popular entertainment strip, turns one. And for owner and operator Anthony De Freitas it has simply been a labour of love to bring to Saint Lucia a quality entertainment spot in a friendly and safe environment. “I have been in the restaurant and entertainment sector now for twenty years,” De Freitas, who opened a pizzeria in St. Vincent as a young man, told the STAR. He kept it going as the “it” spot in St. Vincent for fifteen years until the global recession. “That’s when I started looking regionally for opportunities and since I have been coming here to Saint Lucia as a boy, I decided to explore the options,” he said.
While many saw a very busy Rodney Bay strip, De Freitas saw a vacuum and a need so one year ago, after much thought and conferring with others, he came up with Coconutz. “We wanted to do something that was cool and casual but classy, fun and exciting, offering high quality entertainment, value for money as well,” he explained. Since opening last February Coconutz has been embraced by locals and visitors alike with theme nights, music variety, good food, signature cocktails, drinks promotions, live events and more. Patrons are invited to treat themselves to authentic Mexican bites prepared by Mexican Chefs, a rock solid Bar, pool table and great entertainment! The establishment is also armed with friendly and capable staff, supervisors and managers including Krystle Noel, John Sutton and Aniona Hamid.
Already the venue has been home to the Campari Calendar model search, a Soca party over the Jazz weekend featuring King Bubba of Barbados, Insanti Carnival band launch, DYP’s Kabaway Carnival event and a pre-party for the very successful Mercury Beach.
“We also cater for birthdays, bridal showers, corporate events; in fact any get-together, give us a call and we can adapt,” De Freitas urged. This Saturday February 27 Coconutz is unleashing an anniversary bash like no other. “This event is really to say thank you to Saint Lucia and to collaborate with our sponsors and supporters to stage this all-inclusive event,” De Freitas said. For just EC$50 the Coconutz first anniversary celebration will feature “live” entertainment by the band 2Mile Hill of Barbados. The drinks-inclusive event will also feature DJ Thurum and DJ Play. Show time is 11 pm with drinks inclusive from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
“We just wanted to continue our high energy and quality delivery on the night as we say thank you,” De Freitas declared. Going forward? “We want to maintain a high standard of quality service and to try to keep improving, being creative and to offer a platform for regional and local talent,” De Freitas expressed. “Oh one more thing, look out for the Coconutz beach bar at a location soon to be disclosed!”
