A group of 52 Saint Lucians are scheduled to leave the island on July 15 to take up employment in the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme. Today the farmers participated in an orientation session hosted by the Department of Labour.
“This engagement exposed the workers to what they should expect when they arrive in Canada, importance of team work and deportment, and the basic do’s and don’ts,” said Minister for Labour Stephenson King following today’s activity. “I was honored to address the young men and urged them to be quality ambassadors for Saint Lucia. The Government and people of Saint Lucia thanks the Canadian authorities, the Eastern Caribbean Liaison Office (ECLS), the farm owners and other partners for their commitment in making this opportunity possible.”
King indicated that the farmers will leave the island on July 15 via special charter and will be employed on farms in various provinces, for a maximum of eight months. “All workers signed commitment contracts and will undergo two weeks mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Canada,” the minister stated. (A total of 76 farmers have already gone to Canada under the programme this year).
