ATM theft the new normal?

There truly is anything you want to know on the Internet, including information on how to hack and crack an ATM machine. Go figure! Efforts to rob or steal ATM machines had not been the norm in St Lucia, however, until recently. Have local thieves been using Google to their advantage?
Needless to say the latest ATM theft attempt in St Lucia was thwarted by a police officer. Consolidated Foods has confirmed that on January 7, 2013 there was a break-in at their Cul De Sac store (Super J IGA) just before 4am.
According to a statement from the company the break-in resulted in “serious damage to our entrance door, some damage to the ceiling, shelving as well as damage to product.”
The company believed that the target of the break-in was ATM machine housed within the store.
Read the statement: “Our security alarm and other alert mechanisms were triggered and allowed for quick response to what was happening. As a result nothing was taken. A team of staff from the store and some of the store’s business continuity responders worked very quickly to restore some ‘semblance of normalcy’ in the shortest possible time. We were able to resume operations at 10am and are able to serve customers with very minimal discomfort.  However we are satisfied with overall level of responsiveness of all parties: the security company, police, and our staff and wish to thank them for their quick actions.”
Reports are that the attempted break-in was called short by a nearby police officer who “intercepted” the suspects and the robbers fled the scene.  Late last year some ATM thieves were successful in their attempt to steal an ATM machine from a petrol station along the Millennium Highway. The thieves were never caught but the ATM was later found by police, minus the money.
