We have to ask ourselves, why? Why is there such mistrust and division in a country of 165,000 people? Why can’t people understand that these measures have been put in place, not because anybody hates them, but for their own health?”

Last week I reported on Kenny Anthony’s Lunch Room interview with his former political attaché Calixte George Jr. “Rick leave Kenny alone! None other than former prime minister Kenny Anthony who on Tuesday declared: “I believe this is a matter that calls for a high level of political dialogue between both political parties. I firmly believe that. And I’m not so sure that this is a dialogue that should be conducted through NEMAC [National Emergency Management Advisory Committee]. I am not so sure, despite their responsibility. Perhaps the better thing might have been for the House to appoint a special committee of the House comprising members of the government and members of the opposition to meet regularly in dialogue with the medical community, the medical fraternity, to discuss the issue and what is unfolding.”

The blue, yellow, black and white of our country’s flag has popped up here and there in citizen regalia over the last week. Nothing of course like the streams of bright red clothing that flowed through our streets in the lead-up to that other February holiday just over a week ago. So far it seems this year’s build-up to the big day has barely scratched the surface of the jingoistic fervour which draped our country blue last year. Even culture minister Senator Fortuna Belrose earlier this week admitted at a press conference that this Independence celebration won’t be as grandiose.

A scene quite haunting in its quiet stillness. It was a beautifully bleak sight to my Saint Lucian eyes, especially when juxtaposed against our own verdant mountainsides, hills and valleys. Our greenery, as opposed to the English variety, is unapologetically loud. As I drew nearer my Fair Helen home, I could not help but think about how this fascinating contrast also reminded me of the week I’d just spent in faraway Formosa.
