St Mary’s College held off Soufriere Comprehensive 28-20 to win the Schools Under-15 Basketball title, while Soufriere had a taste of success in the Under-19’s with an exciting 45-42 come from behind win over Vieux Fort Comprehensive in the finals of the two divisions played at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex Thursday.
In the day’s second match, Vieux Fort lead at the first three quarters 13-8, 29-15 and 34-29, but Soufriere were hinting they were determined to return home in some glory, narrowing the gap during the latter stages of the third quarter.
Vieux Fort let slip a golden opportunity to seal the match in the final two minutes squandering five from the free throw line, while Soufriere gained momentum in the
dying stages of the match including a bucket close to the final buzzer.
The big player for Soufriere Comprehensive was Charg Williams who scored 17 points backed up by a mammoth 34 rebounds and three steals. Aaron Lawrencin contributed a handy 13 points, six rebounds and seven steals.
For Vieux Fort, the high points went to Shane Samuel with 14 and three rebounds. Brent Mathurin had eight points, five rebounds and 15 steals while Armani Raveneau added eight points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Earlier Saint Mary’s College maintained a healthy lead throughout the match to emerge winners of the day’s opening game. They were ahead at all quarters 5-2, 16-7, 20-13 and a victory line of 28-20 over the young Soufriere lads.
Donaj Joseph wearing the number six Jersey was the College’s stand out player. He had 11 points, four rebounds, seven steals and two assists. Lennard Melius chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and pulled a blocked shot.
Soufriere’s top scorers were Raymond Anthony with 10 points, Jennick Dolort five points and 11 rebounds and Raquelme Sylvester registered four points, 11 rebounds, six steals and one assist.
