Boxing president throws in the towel!

Down but not out! David “Shakes” Christopher is no longer President of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association.

St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association President (SLABA), David “Shakes” Christopher has thrown in the towel. He decided to step down as head of the association.
Christopher made the decision in light of a matter before the courts, where he has been charged for a breach of the law of the land. In announcing his decision, Christopher indicated the he was conscious of the
fact that boxing on the island has attracted many youngsters. He would in no way want to tarnish the name of the association and set a bad example for the many up and coming young persons in the sport, to whom discipline and being law abiding citizens have been stressed in their training.
Christopher’s decision was taken several days ago and communicated to the rest of the (SLABA) executive but announced at this time. There were several matters he had to attend to as boxing association president and to set a smooth platform from which the rest of the (SLABA) executive would have to carry on with.
The well known sports promoter who has served as SLABA President for over three years, found it necessary to remove himself from leading the activities of the association, but will continue to provide support to the executive in completing the programs set out by the association for the year.
This includes participation in regional boxing tournaments in Guadeloupe and Barbados next month and the national boxing championships in December.
In the interim, former president Joseph “Reds” Perreira has been asked to assume the lead role and to handle the affairs of the association.
The SLABA stated that Christopher’s contribution to the sport of boxing on the island cannot be overlooked as under his stewardship the sport has grown significantly.  A team of boxers has been able to participate in tournaments worldwide. More recently, he was able to secure the participation of two boxers at the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku, a major achievement for a country in the Eastern Caribbean.
Christopher’s additional achievements in the local sporting fraternity are well documented. The SLABA is truly thankful for his immense passion and contribution towards the development of boxing on the island. He will remain as a family member to the association and wishes him and his family all the best in the future.
