BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

This October Faces of Cancer – St. Lucia, along with the Oncology Centre, is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early, and, through ongoing research, clinical trials, and recent breakthroughs, there is much hope in extending survivorship.

Woman aged 40 to 49, should talk with their doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to have them. If you are a woman aged 50 to 74, it is recommended that you
have a mammogram every two years. Every woman should talk to her doctor about the risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member has had breast or ovarian cancer. A doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

This year Faces of Cancer – St. Lucia will be observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a number of activities. Joining us will be the St. Lucia Cancer Society, Bureau of Health Services and Pan American Insurance.
