Anyone can get a good sense of Saint Lucia’s history through its poetry. Poetry records the sensibilities, aspirations, and turbulences in the life of a nation. It also provides solace in times of grief and pain. Countries normally look to their poets in times of national tragedy. Poetry has been a savior to many during this pandemic. Additionally, poetry keeps nations honest by critiquing national hubris and irrational bureaucratic formations.

The definition of what is art cannot be contained or constricted to a Freudian-style theology when appreciating art. But rather, art is in the beauty of the beholder. Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” The works of young artist Orrin Vivaldi d'Auvergne capture this child-like innocence that many of us have lost due to the practicalities of life. D'Auvergne has a transcendental body of work where the elements of earth, wind and fire are brought together through his use of acrylic paint on canvas.

The cast then was appropriately selected from students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, and the stage management, musicians and actors created an eerie atmosphere given the resources at the National Cultural Centre. The performance evoked tears (I dare not sell out the big-time judge behind me who was sniffling) and suspense at every plot twist of unexpected suicide or the sealing of a deal with the devil. This was one of the best locally produced stage events I’d ever attended. It added icing to the cake when I discovered the writers and directors were also SALCC students.

The question that shook up the house: “A woman has just awoken after being asleep for 20 years. What do you tell her she has missed?”“That’s a really good question,” said Verneuil, seemingly without a response. Six candidates before had only set off an explosion of audience laughter or dead silence. But Ms Verneuil had not stopped thinking. Finally, she said: “The world has improved drastically. The form of communication has developed quite a lot. People depend on social media a lot in this day and age.” Again the house blew up but this time with unrestrained applause.
