St Lucia’s second boxer at the World Amateur Boxing Championships being held in Almaty Kazakhstan, British based Heavyweight Ryan Charles lost out in his bout Friday to an opponent from Chile.
Charles lost to Miguel Correa of Chile on points 90 pts to 78pts. Judge number two of Kazakhstan scored the bout 30-27, judge number three (Ecuador) scored the bout 30-25 and judge number (Ireland) scored it 30-26. Charles had a bye into the next round of the championships.
St Lucia’s other boxer at the championships Lyndell “The Russian” Marcellin, also lost out on points on Wednesday in a welterweight contest 90 pts to 77pts against an opponent from Turkmenistan.
This world championships was the first time St Lucian boxers fought without protective headgear-a new rule introduced by the international amateur body for boxing AIBA earlier this year.
Both boxers successfully completed a three week camp held in Almaty Kazakhstan in preparation for the tournament.
