Committee to decide on Homes for Monuments

The Cabinet of Ministers has appointed a three member committee to deliberate on proposals for the location of two national monuments-The Freedom Monument and the Sir John Compton Monument.
The Freedom Monument was commissioned by the former SLP Government to commemorate the emancipation of the people of Saint Lucia from slavery, while the Sir John Compton Monument (2007) which was commissioned by the former UWP Government, honours the legacy of Saint Lucia’s first Prime Minister.
Upon assuming office in November 2011, the Government of Saint Lucia initiated discussions on the possible location of these two monuments. To date, consultations have been held with the sculptor of the monuments, Mr. Ricky George, the family of the late Sir John Compton and members of the public through the facebook page of Prime Minister Hon. Kenny D. Anthony on possible locations for the two completed national monuments.
Some of the popular suggestions for the location of the Freedom Monument include:  Cul de Sac Junction, Jean-Baptiste Street Round About, Sans Souci, Vieux-Fort, near George Odlum Stadium. The Vigie Round About, Constitution Park and the William Peter Boulevard are among the suggestions for the location of the Sir John Compton Monument.
The committee which consists of renowned poet, Mr. Robert Lee (Chairman), Mr. Darrel Montrope (Cabinet Secretary) and Mr. Ricky George (Sculptor) will review submissions for the location of the National Monuments and report back to Cabinet no later than July 30, 2012. The Committee has been directed to consult the public before it submits its report to Cabinet.
