Some in their ranks may have been catching a bad rap lately but two policemen this week showed that they are made of a more winning streak. First, on Tuesday evening police officer Gilroy ‘Gillo’ Gaston became the first police officer to win the Inter-commercial House Calypso Competition. The event took place in the National Cultural Centre Grounds. (See more in 2NITE magazine).
Then on Thursday The WAVE 94.5 announced the winner of its annual People’s Choice Soca Performer: Kerwyn Bowers, better known as Private 6, who is also a police officer. Private 6 won himself a trophy, EC$4,000 and a Samsung Galaxy, compliments of Digicel. His release and winning song is ‘On Fleek.’
Speaking at a brief ceremony held at The Wave on Thursday, the singer said he felt “very ecstatic.” “Private 6 has been an artiste for almost a decade and right now I would like to thank The Wave, Digicel, First Citizens and all other sponsors for giving me the opportunity to represent the people and to be the people’s monarch,” he said. A finalist in the national Soca monarch competition previously, he shared this with his fellow artistes: “Never give up on your dreams; there are always possibilities; put God first and always have faith, and work at your craft; you never know when your time will come.”
