Cory Serieux: Shooting For The Stars

Young striker Corey Serieux.

Who says that boys can’t play among men? Or that children must always know their place? Those saying are definitely inaccurate, at least they do not apply in the sporting world of Cory Serieux, young and promising striker with the dream of playing professional football one day.

At just 16 years old, Cory Serieux is already striving to be the best in football. With the promise that he has shown over the past year in the latest installment of the Mon Repos Football competition, that feat is very possible.

Cory, better known as Corex, is a Form 5 student of the Anse Ger Secondary School. Like most sportspersons, he fell in love with football at a tender age.

“I always liked football. Through watching it on TV, I became really interested and when I was about 10 years old I developed a desire to become a professional footballer,” he says.

Like many of his family members, Cory was nurtured by and became a member of the Grass Street Youth and Sports Club Organization. Through his willingness and passion for football he made his first appearance for the team at age twelve. “When I began playing football I wanted to be a keeper. But after fracturing my arm trying to save a shot, I decided that position was not for me and then I began focusing on being a striker,” he informs us. He says that of all the persons who helped nurture him in his humble beginnings, his cousin and manager of the Grass Street Football Team, Guillus Mathurin, had the biggest impact. In terms of his development as a player, he relates that to his favorite coach  Vance Vitalis. “Because of him, my technique, control, shooting and passing have improved so much,” Cory explained.

In the 2013 edition of the Mon Repos Guinness Cup, Cory scored 10 goals in 5 games for his club including a quadruple, a hat trick and a double. He topped the goal scorer’s list with his overall tally eventually winning the award for “Most Goals.”

“It feels really great that I decided to stay with this football club, because I got the chance to enjoy a great season finally after we struggled for years through trying to build our team and now we are very confident in our squad,” he confessed.

Cory says that it was a great experience playing in the final last year especially as it was his first season as a first-team player. But the experience wasn’t all that he hoped it would be as the team lost the final game on a penalty shootout. In his mind Grass Street should’ve won the finals and blames himself for the loss. “I should have scored at least two of my chances. I felt really sad when we lost,” Cory, who also plays for the Anse Ger Secondary School, says:

“My short-term aim is to score more goals than I did last season and to lead Grass Street to the finals again but this time to be crowned champions.

“For my long-term aim, I want to be a professional footballer, and to accomplish my very first childhood dream, which is becoming a fireman. “And if I was given the opportunity to choose one superstar to be my teammate, it would be Lionel Messi,” he continued, predicting that Brazil will win the World Cup this year. His preferred football clubs are Manchester City and Barcelona, favorite player; Sergio Aguero. But in his opinion Lionel Messi is the best in the world.

It comes as no surprise that Cory’s top 5 footballers in the world right now are either attacking players or strikers: Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Eden Hazard, and Robert Lewandowski.
