After scoring 12 goals in two matches during play in the 2012 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament, Gros Islet could not score when it mattered most. As a result they were shutout and knocked out in their semi-final encounter Saturday evening against Dennery.
For the first time in the tournament, Gros Islet marksmen especially Vard Daniel who has a tournament high five goals were kept of the score sheet. As a result it is Dennery moving on to the finals Saturday evening at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
The winning goal was scored by striker Levi “Bushman” Gilbert in the 40th minute of the encounter.
Despite being down 1-0 after the first half, Gros Islet supporters seemed hardly worried. They knew full well their team fell behind 1-0 in two previous games, but stormed back in the second half of both encounters to win going away. However on this night it was not to be.
Two-time former champions Dennery will now go up against Soufriere in the final. Prior to the Gros Islet Dennery semi-final, Soufriere went up against Canaries in the other semi-final.
Soufriere came out on top 2-1after trailing 1-0. Canaries scored the opening in the 39th minute with a goal from Bradley Tisson. However just before half time Hasley Serville evened the score.
The winning goal which propelled Soufriere into the championship game came from Kenneh Simon. Somehow his shot from long range got past Canaries goalkeeper John “Maverick” St Omer.
In an interview following the game jubilant Soufriere Coach, Mark Henry said: “Really and truly this is a very big victory for us, especially with the rivalry going on between Canaries and Soufriere.”
Describing the first half of play he said: “The guys were a little bit shaky and were not focused and stuff, but going back to the dressing room we talked to each other and arranged stuff and ended up taking it from them {Gros Islet}.
The final between Dennery and Soufriere will be played Saturday from 7:00 pm at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, for the Grand Prize of $15,000 thousand dollars in cash and other prizes. Before the final Canaries and Gros Islet take face each other in the third place playoff.
