The teams participating in the 2012 Blackheart Knockout Football finals went through extensive preparations for the grand finals of the tournament today (Saturday) at the Beausejour Cricket Ground from 7:00pm.
Dennery and Soufriere earned their spots in the final by coming through the tough brackets of the tournament’s draw. Two time former champions Dennery made it through from the top half of the draw, getting past Laborie 2-0, Micoud 4-2 and Gros Islet 1-0-scoring seven goals with two against.
Soufriere came through from the bottom half of the draw winning over Mabouya Valley 2-1, defeating Mon Repos 3-1 and getting past Canaries 2-1-scoring seven goals with three against.
This is the fourth appearance in a final of the Blackheart Tournament for Dennery, equaling Mabouya Valley’s four final appearances. A victory for them will also see them equal Mabouya Valley’s record of three Blackheart titles.
Dennery is the only team to win the Blackheart Football title back to back having won in 2007 and 2008 at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
For Soufriere on the other hand this is their second Blackheart Final, having made it to the finals in 2009 when the tournament was held at the George Odlum Stadium.
On that occasion they lost to Mabouya Valley 2-1 after scoring first through former national player Agustus “Fada” Lucien.
A victory for Soufriere in the Blackheart finals will be their first major victory for sometime in national football, after tasting success at the youth and club levels previously.
Before the big final, Gros Islet and Canaries will meet in the third place play off from 5:00pm.
