ECTEL Continues to Celebrate

Secondary school students from several institutions located in the environs of the Saint Lucia-based headquarters of the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority – ECTEL, were exposed to the operations of ECTEL as well as other issues related to technology on Wednesday, June 3.

IT/ICT students from Sir Ira Simmons Secondary, Castries Comprehensive, Vide Bouteille Secondary, St. Mary’s College, Corinth Secondary and the Seventh-day Adventist attended the Open Day.

The students learnt about ECTEL and its operations, careers in ICT and at ECTEL in particular, broadband and open access issues including number portability, cyber security, quality of service standards, net neutrality, responsible navigating of social media and spectrum management.

Saint Lucia Seventh-day Adventist Academy third-former Dwayne Headley was ecstatic about the event:“ I learnt a lot in particular about spectrum and how devices can be used to pick up audio from different parts of the world for free,” adding, “I hope to come back again or even work here [at ECTEL]; I am actually considering it.”

His classmate Jacinth Frederick agreed: “It [the visit] was very educational.”

The Open Day activity is among a number of events planned to mark ECTEL’s 15th anniversary celebrations. The theme of the celebrations is: “Committed to Broadband and Open Access in a Digital World”.
