As forecasted the world did not end on Saturday, however, four teams, including two former champs did not survive the opening round of the Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament over the weekend at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, three time former Champions Mabouya Valley lost to Vieux Fort North 1-0. The winning goal was scored by Davian Flavius in the 70th minute.
In the second game, defending Champions Micoud got whacked from this year’s tournament with Desruisseaux delivering the death blow on penalty kicks. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation time, but Desruisseaux prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.
During regulation time, Desruisseaux went ahead 1-0 on an own goal courtesy of Conrad Evans in the sixth minute. Cornelius Butcher equalized for Micoud in the 58th minute. Desruisseaux went ahead 2-1 this time it was Chad Flavius beating the Micoud goalkeeper. Kevin Samuel got the equalizer in regulation time, before Micoud eventually lost in a penalty shootout.
For Babonneau too death came early as they lost 3-0 to Anse La Raye in the opening match of the competition Saturday and for Laborie who were also shutout losing 4-0 to Dennery.
Lawrence St Croix scored two goals and Nicholas Gabriel added another for Anse La Raye in their victory over Babonneau.
In Dennery’s victory over Laborie, Nyhime Gilbert led the way with two goals with single markers going to Donovan Sealy and Nicholas Leon.
Commenting on the tournament Director of Blackheart Productions, David “Shakes” Christopher said: “It’s really been upset galore with Mabouya Valley and Micoud being knocked out. We see new teams like Desruisseaux emerging.
Anse La Raye is exciting as ever and Vieux North which is always a boogie team pulling off an upset. The tournament is wide open with any team capable of winning.”
He went on to say: “We do not have two of the two big teams in this tournament anymore and it goes to show it’s how you perform on the day. It seems all the small communities are gunning for the bigger communities and towns.”
When asked if the upsets take some of the lustre away from the tournament Christopher replied: “No way. When the tournament started the world was suppose to end. It didn’t, but there is a new world in this competition where we see new teams emerging and starting to make their mark. It’s going to be exciting.”
Following a two day break the tournament resumes Wednesday with Soufriere going up against South Castries at 6 pm. Following that match, Gros Islet take on Mon Repost at 8 pm.
