No one wants to be last. This mentality drove three teams as they moved to complete their final matches in the Commercial Volleyball Tournament. Recently The Royal St Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) faced off against LIME.
The Police after two heart breaking losses in the earlier rounds, sought out to make a statement. They did that. Led by National Player Dayne Williams Police handed out the worst beating in the tournament thus far to LIME, winning two sets to nil (25-16, 25-9).
The second match of the day saw The National Skills Development Centre (NSDC), face off against Sandals Resorts. An entertaining display as always when Sandals play.
NSDC put up a hell of a fight in the first set but Sandals etched out to win it 25-23. The second set was a bit less competitive as Sandals cruise to a 25-15 win displacing NSDC.
Last Saturday an epic day was in store for fans as they rolled into the arena for “Volleyball Wars”. The first match of featured, “The war of the Ministries” as The Ministry of Youth & Sports battled The Ministry of Education.
The first set was a see-saw affair as the ministry of sports got out to a quick start. However the experience of Servin Mongroo (national setter, best setter recipient at the recently hosted 2014 FIVB World Championship Qualification), saw the Ministry of Education through to win the first set 25-23.
The second set was a different story as the educators never trailed and convincingly won 25-12.
The second epic feature of the day dubbed “Telecommunication Wars,” saw Digicel vs LIME to determine the “Bigger, Better, Network”. Both teams entered the arena with their game faces on. The crowd braced for action.
LIME with their cheer leaders hyped, Digicel wooing the crowd with clappers and horns. The stage was set. The first set bartered points as both teams played with increasing intensity. Every point was played as if it was the game winner. Digicel managed to etch a win in the first but heated set 25-23.
The second set saw a wounded LIME lash out to prevent their demise. With roaring spikes and defends from beach volleyball coach Hervon Brown and former national player Marvin Charlery, LIME secured the second set 25-12.
The third set tie breaker saw the two wounded teams each needing a win, step on the pedestal to fight a valiant battle. This set saw many lead changes, as the two power house competitors put on a remarkable display of offense and defence. In the end unforced errors saw LIME fall to Digicel 15-12. The sounds of the chant “Digicel, The bigger, better, network” echoed.
The fun is not over yet. On Friday NSDC went up against The Ministry of Youth & Sports to determine seventh and eighth place and Sandals Resorts battled the Ministry of Education for fifth and sixth place.
