Another Bordelais Inmate Dead whilst Incarcerated

On Wednesday 29 September at about 10:40 am fire service personnel responded to a distress call from the Bordelais Correctional Facility. Information received stated that an inmate had been injured as a result of an explosion. The inmate has since been indentified as 23 year old Yohan Henry.

Yohan Henry, the latest inmate to meet his demise whilst incarcerated at the Bordelais Correctional Facility.

Initial investigations have revealed that the explosion was from a steam iron tank that sent chunks of metal flying which resulted in a fatal injury to the head of the young inmate.

According to Fire Service personnel, upon arrival at the scene, Henry was found lying face down on the floor and was pronounced dead by a medical practitioner. Subsequently, the matter was left in the care of the police.

Henry was sentenced to 3 years, 3 months imprisonment in 2019 after entering a guilty plea to a single count of dangerous bodily harm and would have been due for release in 2023. As part of his sentence, Henry was also assigned to the “Kitchen Helpers Program” during the time of his incarceration. In his sentencing hearing, Henry was described as “a regular church goer, who sings in his church choir”, “an avid sportsman” and was a member of the national Rugby team. His coach described him then “as an inspiration and moral supporter to the other team members”. Henry would have turned 24 years on Monday.

This latest incident brings to a total of three inmates who have died under varying circumstances whilst incarcerated at the correctional facility over the last few weeks.

No statement from the Bordelais Correctional Facility or Ministry of Justice has been received at this time.
