Over 150 Saint Lucians living in New York turned out on Sunday, October 6, 2019 to witness the coronation ceremony of the first ever Mamai La Caye La Marguerite group outside the island.
The event started with the swearing-in of the judges Claudette Narcisse and Betheldred Francois, and governor Mama Marguerite Dawna Regis, and continued with the installation of the rest of the royal family. The queen is Marylene Gaston; the king, Rayan James; prince, Urius Marshall and princess, Georgina Smith.
In her first throne speech, Her Majesty stated, “Today, I must say how happy and elated I am to be appointed and elevated to the title of queen of the La Marguerite Society. Today marks the making of history, as I am also the first queen to be crowned outside of Saint Lucia, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity.
“When we sang the national anthem, Sons and Daughters, we are reminded that wherever we are, wherever we go, we represent the most beautiful fair Helen. As sons and daughters of this beautiful isle, my government has made a firm commitment in encouraging us to pass on the culture from generation to generation, bearing in mind that everyone has to partake of the banquet.
“My government has pledged to acknowledge that the La Marguerite Society will be celebrated in full force with all its splendour, beauty and kaleidoscope of colours. Today I ask that through our patron saint, St Marguerite, we come to an understanding of love, patriotism, and that whatever we do, we do it always remembering our country comes first.
“To my king: I must acknowledge how happy I am to serve with you in building a better and stronger society. I know the road ahead is a very demanding one.
“To my subjects: your full participation in upholding the dignity and respect of your office is a must—not a choice.
“To the members of the La Marguerite Society, I ask God’s blessing upon you. To our patrons and supporters, we love you. Vive La Marguerite!”
