FOCUS is fulfilling needs under the sun

No doubt about it the two youngsters were delighted to receive presents from Levern Spencer.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e often hear of Levern Spencer’s exploits in high jump in various international competitions, however,  her good deeds do not always receive the publicity they deserve. Well folks, on Sunday Spencer in collaboration with the group FOCUS (Fulfilling Our Calling Under the Sun) of which she is a member, embarked on Christmas Hamper Distribution. The group assembled on the Cacao Babonneau Playing Field before heading out.

Pastor Gregory Dixon who is Spencer’s Manager and the President of FOCUS said: “The Group Focus was formed out of the need for us to be a little bit more active in our community particularly as Christians. You know sometimes we do more talking than acting. We thought it was necessary for us to put into action the things we talk about all the time. It is the festive season, lots of persons around our community of Babonneau may not be having the best of Christmas, because their situation may not be the best. As a group we thought it was necessary to embark on this special hamper distribution this afternoon. We have already identified a few persons in the community we think are deserving of these hampers, so we will be going out there to contribute to making their life better.”

Dixon pointed that Spencer along with other members belonging to the Gospel Baptiste Church in Babonneau, are a closely knit family that includes Spencer’s mother and also his wife. The group FOCUS was recently formed and hope to continue their good deeds into the New Year and beyond, not just with hampers but with any other way they can assist as a group. Further afield the group also plans to assist students at various schools in the community and have already received the thumbs up from various officials there. Spencer who is based in the United State is currently here on holidays, before beginning another grueling 2019 season on the international circuit. “I am very happy to be part of this newly formed group,” said the world ranked high jumper and St Lucia’s multi Sportswoman of the Year. “Our main goal and purpose is not just around the Christmas season but throughout the year 2019. We will be recognizing people who are less fortunate and helping then in many other ways, not just by distributing hampers. Whether it’s cleaning their house or in other ways.”

In the past Spencer has always assisted young athletes providing them with equipment and hosting several high jump clinics. You could not ask for a better role model. Helping others has always been a top priority. She told me: “This is a passion of mine because I love serving others. I love helping people and this is pretty much what I went to school for. I studied health promotion so that’s why I selected that major. It is something I am passionate about so I am happy to be part of this group and to embark on this journey.
