Former MP Charged in Shooting Incident

Local attorney and former MP Marius Wilson was on Monday granted bail in the sum of $10,000, following an appearance in court in connection with a shooting incident at the Spinners nightclub on Thursday morning.
The STAR has been informed by police sources that Wilson, a former Leader of the Opposition, had been in police custody immediately following the incident and was officially charged on Saturday with discharging a firearm with the intent to cause dangerous harm and discharging a firearm in a public place.
Reports that the former Leader of the Opposition had also been charged with possession of a firearm not at the time licensed were denied by sources close to him who said Wilson’s firearm license was valid until 2014.
Represented by Alberton Richelieu, he appeared upbeat during Monday’s court appearance, to which reporters were denied access.
Winsbert Alexander, who was shot in the chest area, was scheduled to be discharged from Victoria Hospital on Monday. According to sources close to the victim, no charges were filed by Alexander. The STAR has learned that the charges against Marius Wilson are brought by the State. A high-ranking police official said that despite that the victim may not be interest in pursuing the matter, the state may choose to do so.
“I don’t propose to pronounce any judgment on the case,” said police commissioner Vernon Francois, “but it is an issue that obviously is of concern to us. The fact that it appears that the incident involves a licensed firearm holder is irrelevant. You pay for your license every three years and if you do not paythen  it becomes an illegal weapon. We did some work last year in terms of chasing after people who had not paid their licenses so that is one issue.”
Additionally: “Licensed firearm holders need to ensure that they pay their licenses and the second thing is that you have to be responsible. You have to be able to justify your actions. Notwithstanding the fact that we have issued you a license, you still are responsible for justifying your actions.”
