Gandolph St. Clair, a leading figure of the local arts community, was laid to rest on Monday this week.
St. Clair was a noted composer, writer, playwright, filmmaker and actor. At his send-off at the Castries Cathedral eulogies were delivered by colleagues, among them Kennedy ‘Boots’ Samuel and Fish Alphonse (pictured with Peter Isaac and other pall bearers outside the cathedral).
By Charles Cadet
Felt brim lowered over eyes
Stern look betrayed by wry smile
Soft the spoken word
Loud the written line
Together shared a Kwéyòl joke
Regretted changes dimming folk
His lyric line my music mined
He mimed my music Reggae time
Moving amidst the crowd
Managed yet to be apart
And now at Death’s call
Finding wish, seeking recall
To have better known him, after all.
The poem is
dedicated to the late Gandolph St. Clair.
