Raymond Percival of St Kitts emerged as the Men’s Champion of the St Lucia Tourist Board open Golf Championship, staged over the weekend at the St Lucia Golf Club under challenging conditions.
St Lucian golfers young and old did extremely well in the competition. Canice Louis who seems to be making a comeback, was named Senior Men’s Champion.
Eighty players from islands and countries as far afield as UK, St Maarten, St Kitts, Martinique, Grenada, Barbados, Trinidad and of course St Lucia, competed in the two-day event.
The weather on the practice day, Friday was unkind to the players. This pattern continued throughout the weekend, with the heaviest rainfall on Sunday around mid-day.
At that point the Grounds Superintendent, Paul Sheppard, closed the course for 45 minutes. However, thanks to the excellent drainage system, just after 1 pm all players were able to resume their rounds, with only the junior golfers (13 to 15 years of age) having to cut their Sunday round from 18 to nine holes.
A few players found the conditions too severe and did not complete their rounds, but 99 percent of the golfers played through and finished the course.

Notable Net Results: Men’s Net Champion, Naveen Urs, St Lucia; Senior Men’s Net Champion, Paul Cooper, St Lucia; Super Senior Men’s Champion, Keith Woodhouse, St Lucia; Ladies Net Champion, Amy Berglund, St Lucia; Juniors 13-15 Net Champion, Daronhil Mauricette, St Lucia; Junior Under-12 Net Champion, Linus Clovis, St Lucia.
Seventeen juniors entered in the junior category. The other junior winners from St Lucia were Rayshorn Joseph, Adrian Richelieu, Oliver Devaux and Jonathan Bruce.
The Tournament was organized by Tim Mangal and Joan Paul with assistance from members of the St Lucia Golf Association Committee, Trevor Cozier and Paul
Cooper. Considerable help was given by John Bruce who acted as starter and by Henix Joseph who manned the scoreboard for the two days.
The Tournament Premier Sponsor this year was the St Lucia Tourist Board with the St Lucia Golf Club, Du Boulays Bottling Co Ltd and the Sagicor Group of Companies coming in as secondary sponsors.
