They were the Cinderella’s of the 2013 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament and just like the fairy tale, at the stroke of midnight (give or take a few minutes or so) Babonneau’s hopes for a title ended early Sunday morning, as Gros Islet came out on top in the final 3-0.
Over 5,000 spectators attended the final which never lived up to the pre game hype. That’s because Gros Islet stamped their authority early in the game leading 3-0 after the first half. That’s all they needed as Babonneau was held scoreless the rest of the way.
The goal scorers for Gros Islet were Eden “Eve” Charles whose strike in the 14th minute proved to be the game winner. Troy Greenidge made it 2-0 in the 17th minute then Charles scored his second of the game in the 43rd minute.
Following the game jubilant Gros Islet Manager Mike Phillip said: “We are victorious that’s what we were looking for. From the start I told David “Shakes” Christopher [Blackheart CEO] we were going to surprise them and indeed we did.”
Phillip showered everyone with high praise. He mentioned Coach Francis “Baba” Lastic, the players along with the technical staff.
For winning the title Gros Islet claimed the $15,000 cash prize, the Lime Trophy plus 25 replica trophies and gold medals.
Second place Babonneau received $7,500 dollars in cash, the Guinness Trophy plus 25 replica trophies and silver medals.
Prior to the final was the Third Place Playoff. Former champions Mabouya won that affair after a win on penalties in sudden death against Roseau Valley, after their encounter ended goalless after regulation and extra time. Mabouya took home the Bizz Up Trophy and $3,500 for their third place finish. Roseau Valley collected $1,500 dollars and the St Lucia Insurances Trophy for their fourth place finish.
Charles of the victorious Gros Islet team was named Tournament MVP. The other top individual and team awards will be presented later this week at the cheque and prize giving ceremony for the tournament.
