House Convenes: Prime Minister to Further Borrow!

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, Kenny D. Anthony is expected to seek the approval of parliament to secure a loan of $3,000,000.00 from the National Insurance Corporation, to finance the Cruise Sector Employment Program.

Prime Minister Kenny Anthony seeks approval for more borrowing months after a proposed civil servant pay cut. Can we afford this?

This program was first announced during the 2014/2015 budget. Since then it has stirred a hornet’s nest with at least one official from Carnival Cruise lines in an exclusive interview with the STAR denying knowledge of the program.

The Prime Minister had announced that the Government of Saint Lucia had entered into an arrangement with Carnival Cruise Lines, the Saint Lucia Development Bank and the Springboard Training Institute to provide jobs for unemployed youth.

According to the Government, over two hundred young people would be trained and provided with low interest loans, so as to enable them to benefit from employment opportunities in the cruise sector.

The Money Services Business (Amendment) Bill, the Immigration (Amendment) Bill and the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Bill, will also be presented for first reading.

The House of Assembly convened today, Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 10:00 am.

  • Another Doomed to Failure economic policy that will only hasten the completion of total destruction of our economic outlook well into the foreseeable future. Borrowing with absolutely no ability to repay AGAIN. You can't even afford to pay the gardener to keep the grass cut outside your offices and you're wanting the NIS to foot the bill for your skewed financial ideology ? What happens to the NIS when you can't repay the loan ?? NIS is already bankrupt because of your failed economic management and as usual you want the people to bend over even further and take it some more? Do the honourable thing and STEP DOWN Kenny!! You have proven to be totally incompetent!!
