St Lucians from all walks of life were tuned to the 60th anniversary edition of the Miss Universe pageant on Monday night, most unable to hide the sense of pride they felt just from having someone from their
country participate in a pageant so prestigious. The pageant was held at the Credicard Hall in São Paulo, Brazil and 25-year-old Joy Ann Biscette, a seasoned pageant contestant, who took part in Miss World 2008 and several other pageants was St Lucia’s representative.
Individual introductions were made and Joy Ann, wearing a glamorous yellow gown, did her thing along with 88 other contestants who participated in this year’s event. When the results were announced, countries that had made the top 16 included China, the USA, Philippines, Angola, Australia, France, Kosovo, Colombia, Puerto Rica, Brazil, Netherlands, Venezuela, Ukraine, Panama (winner of best costume) Portugal and Costa Rica. At the end of it all, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico crowned her successor, Leila Lopes of
Angola queen.
Although Joy Ann didn’t make it to the top 16, congratulations have been flying her way for a job well done. She was one of the contestants who’d stood out from the beginning, named “one to watch” on numerous online entertainment blogs. Vincent Mc Doom and others congratulated her on a job well via her Team Joy Ann Facebook group.
One fan wrote: “You inspire me to go all out, girl you were fantastic! You’ll always be a winner and role model to us. I’m so sad that Joy didn’t place, but girl you looked amazing and you should feel proud that you reached that far. I loved
your dress. Congratulations Miss St Lucia Universe.”
Undoubtedly congratulations were in order and supporters thanked her for representing the island to the maximum. Team Joy Ann was up all night watching the show and throwing words of encouragement her way.
No matter the outcome, they felt she’d given it her all and made them proud.
“You did you country proud; this is only the beginning,” read another post. “This is just the stepping stone for your next great achievement. Never give up!”
For them, Joy Ann was exceptional, and there was no one who could’ve represented the island better than she did.
“You did your best and I want to say thanks for being so courageous,” read yet another online post. “You are my Miss universe. We have a lot to celebrate upon your return. You are a winner within your heart and our hearts. We do not always need the world to tell us that.”
