St. Lucia’s representative on the IMO, Walid Juffali, a Saudi unheard of until quite recently by St. Lucians, is at the center of a demand from the UK government to the island’s prime minister. The UK has requested the Kenny Anthony government withdraw Juffali’s diplomatic immunity from prosecution so as to permit a former wife with claims on his properties in England to move on with her case. Earlier the prime minister had refused to comply with a similar request from lawyers representing Juffali’s former wife, on the basis to do otherwise would set a bad precedent. The PM has until January 8 to respond. FULL report in December 31 STAR.
