Ladies in Hats!

Upton Gardens and the Women’s Support Centre got much needed recognition.

Digicel, St Lucia’s bigger better network has again demonstrated its support and strong commitment towards championing the cause of the underprivileged and less fortunate in society.

The telecommunications provider and mobile leader registered support both in cash and kind at a recent charity fundraiser dubbed “Ladies in Hats.”

Held under the distinguished patronage of St Lucia’s Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, the fundraiser organized as a tea party by popular media personality and broadcaster Sharon Williams, saw two well established institutions known for advocating the rights of women at risk (The Upton Gardens Girls Centre and The Women’s Support Centre), each receiving monitory donations of EC$1,000 from Digicel.

Marketing Manager Kerchelle Jn Charles told the STAR: “Digicel is pleased to have lent support to such a worthwhile venture, one that seeks to strengthen the role of women in society.”

Jn Charles further added: “As a family oriented company, with an extensive female client base, Digicel is heartened and delighted to contribute to initiatives of this nature, as more and more women serve as family heads and bread winners.” Programmes likes these she says, empower women and ultimately reinforce the work of Digicel in building wholesome families, which is a core element of Digicel’s community support.

Director of the Upton Gardens Girls Centre Prisca St Paul expressed her personal joy and appreciation for the support, saying it would greatly assist the Centre in broadening its outreach, thereby lending support to even more young and disadvantaged girls and ladies in society.

The Women’s Support Centre over the years has built a strong reputation of providing temporary housing to women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse.
