Former English Premier League footballer Les Ferdinand and his associates were special guests of the highly successful Gros Islet Youth Football Program (GYFP). They were not on a scouting mission for “Search for a Star St Lucia”, but you never know, in time to come maybe one of the youngsters they were tutoring from the GYFP and the Boys Training Centre may well become professional footballers.
During the morning session at the Beausejour Cricket ground, youngsters participated in a number of drills under the watchful eye of Ferdinand and a group of instructors associated with the internationally renowned Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club in the UK. Ferdinand was recently here on a scouting project dubbed “Search For A Star St Lucia”— A sports initiative geared at indentifying two young St Lucian footballers who would get the opportunity to join the Totting ham project.
Administrator of the GYP, Jennifer Gaston, welcomed Ferdinand and his group and expressed the joy and happiness of having a well known footballer who is seen and admired on television payed them a visit. Gaston also indicated that such a visit would be an inspiration as well as encouraging youngsters to take the sport seriously and develop their talent.
She thanked the Rex St Lucian Hotel who played a major role in organizing the event as well as providing a grand lunch for the participants, coaches and all who attended.
Ferdinand expressed his pleasure in working with the youths and indicated his interest in continuing such a project in the development of the youth in the sport of Football. He also assured the organizers of the program that he will continue to support it in the coming years.
He said: “It was great to come out and work with the youngsters and see their enthusiasm. I think if you are going to nurture talent it has to be done at an early stage where you can put the right ideas and train of thought in their minds.”
Ferdinand pointed out that it was tough for him growing up and playing football. He told his young audience he never had the luxury of having a professional footballer come to his school at their age and give him any advice.”
No doubt about it, youngsters with at the GYFP and BTC were indeed fortunate to have Les Ferdinand pay them a visit.
