[dropcap]C[/dropcap]harity is one of the noblest tasks one can do in their life. What is charity you ask? Voluntarily providing goods, services, or even a bit of your time to the less fortunate, or anyone in need. Typically, this sort of philanthropy can be initiated through an organisation or on a more personal level, for example: buying a meal for a homeless person, or finding some other way of putting a smile on the face of a stranger!
Any small kind act can make a difference, and giving quite often benefits both the giver, and the receiver. Persons who donate willingly and happily reap more benefits compared to those who donate under pressure, or with the expectation of receiving something in return. Your intention and main goal should be to reduce the other person’s misery without expecting anything in return. Ever heard of good karma?
I am reminded of an old Chinese Proverb: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
Recently, I saw for myself how such acts could come to life. Ironically, it was at the time when I laid my father to rest. During the funeral I took notice of a non-profit charitable organisation present that I know my grandmother contributes to from time to time. I smiled, because their presence there made me realize that their organisation had a bond with my family. My interest in them increased immediately.
Known as Pawasol Pour Ti Mamai (Children’s Umbrella), the non-profit organisation provides assistance to children in need, whether they require medical attention, basic necessities, or supplies and funds for school. Pawasol’s fund raising initiatives include selling at the flea market, organising tombolas, lunch gatherings, film showings, quiz nights and sponsored walks. They also sell special Pawasol cookbooks, calendars and greeting cards!
To know such an organisation exists, and is embraced locally means that we can all play a role in giving back to society in whatever way we can. Especially when it comes to aiding children in need. After all, our children are our future.
Let us make a change and start giving today. Being involved with a charity does not necessarily mean you have to be wealthy. Simple actions such as taking the time to help a child read, or donating items you no longer need can make a difference in another person’s life.
If you’re interested in finding out more about what Pawasol Pour Ti Mamai has done for children in Saint Lucia or if you would like to join the organisation you can contact Pawasol via email: pawasolpourtimamai@gmail.com
